Everything you need to know about dispatching with Truck Relay in Canada. Can't find what you're looking for? We're a phone call away.
Getting Started
What do I get in the free 1 week trial?+
You get the full dispatch experience, not a watered down demo. We find, negotiate and book real loads for you, handle all broker communication, fill out the paperwork and keep your wheels moving. You see exactly how we work before spending a single dollar. No contracts. No BS.
What does the free trial actually cost me?+
Nothing. There is no setup fee, no card on file, no catch. You run for a week on us and if it is not working you walk away owing nothing. We would rather earn your business than trap you into it.
Do I need my own authority to work with Truck Relay?+
It depends on where you're running. For domestic Canadian hauls you don't need an MC number. That's a US requirement and only comes into play when you want to run cross-border. What you need to operate legally in Canada varies by province and we put together a full breakdown on our Carrier Setup Guide page if you're just getting started. And if you don't have your own authority yet, you can haul under ours while you get everything sorted. Either way your truck keeps moving.
What information do I need to provide to get going?+
We keep it simple. Here is what we collect before we start dispatching for you. Your Province or Federal Registry, your Certificate of Insurance covering both cargo and auto, your operating permit which is your NSC, CVOR or NIR depending on your province, a Notice of Assignment if you are set up with a factoring company, your equipment profile, a completed W-8-BEN-E, Workers Compensation documents if you have employees on payroll, and our carrier profile form which we send you directly. Once we have everything on file we are ready to go. Most carriers are running within 24 hours.
How long does setup take before I'm running loads?+
Less than 24 hours in most cases. Once we've got your documents and done a short onboarding call, we're ready to start dispatching. We're built to move fast.
Do you work with sole proprietors or do I need to be incorporated?+
Both work. Whether you are running as a sole proprietor or you are federally or provincially incorporated, we dispatch for you the same way. If you are not sure which setup makes sense for your business, that is something we can talk through on our Carrier Setup consultation.
What if I've never used a dispatcher before?+
Then you're in the right place. Most of our carriers were running solo before joining us. We built Truck Relay for owner-operators who are tired of juggling dispatch and driving. We keep you updated every step of the way without overwhelming you.
Do you dispatch all equipment types?+
Yes. Dry van, reefer, flatbed, power only, box truck and hotshot. If you haul it, we dispatch it.
How Dispatching Works
Will I have one dispatcher or multiple people handling my account?+
One dedicated dispatcher. That's the whole point. No call centres, no getting bounced between agents, no repeating yourself. One person who knows your truck, your lanes and your goals.
How do you find loads?+
We use Loadlink for domestic Canadian loads and DAT for cross-border freight into the US. Between the two we have visibility on what's moving across every major Canadian and cross-border lane. We also have direct relationships with brokers which helps when we need to push on a rate or move fast on a load.
What happens if something goes wrong with a load?+
We handle it. Wrong weight, wrong dimensions, no dock available, a BOL that doesn't match. By the time you'd normally find out something's wrong, we've either fixed it or negotiated extra dollars for the trouble. You don't chase problems. We do.
How fast do you book loads?+
A solid load hits, you're moving on it the same hour. We don't check with the broker and get back to you tomorrow. When the right load comes up, we're on it.
Do you handle cross-border loads?+
Yes, and we handle the full paperwork process that comes with it. PARS, PAPS, eManifest through ACI or ACE, BOLs, rate confirmations. We confirm everything matches before you reach the border so you're not sitting at the line waiting on a missing document.
What are accessorial charges and do you chase those for me?+
Accessorial charges are things like TONU, layover, detention and driver assist. If it wasn't in the original rate confirmation, it's extra dollars you're owed. We track every one and make sure brokers pay them. You don't chase anything.
Do you negotiate rates or just take whatever the broker offers?+
We push back. Brokers throw out a number hoping you'll take it. We know what the lane is worth, we know what your truck should be pulling, and we don't settle. Whatever RPM you tell us you're expecting, that's not the ceiling. We work to get you more.
What if I don't like a load you've found?+
Then we don't book it. We turn down loads that don't make sense for your truck or your week, even when it costs us. If it's not moving you toward your goals, it's not going on your schedule.
Plans and Pricing
What's the difference between Relay Core, Relay Pro and Relay Partner?+
Relay Core covers domestic Canadian dispatch through Loadlink. Everything is handled including load booking, rate negotiation, paperwork and accessorials. Relay Pro adds cross-border capability, invoice generation, factoring submission, document archiving, weather alerts, roadside assistance and facility insights, plus your free website. Relay Partner is the full package for carriers who want everything handled. On top of everything in Relay Pro you get help finding insurance, factoring setup, IRP and IFTA registration and filing, operating permit assistance, ELD setup, end to end cross-border paperwork, weekly check-ins and market and regulation alerts. It is less like a dispatch plan and more like having a business partner.
Why don't you show rates on the pricing page?+
Because a real rate depends on your equipment, your lanes and your situation. Publishing one number would either be a lie or useless to you. Call us, tell us what you are running, and we give you a real number in a few minutes.
Is there a long-term contract?+
No. Start with 1 week free. After that, stay because it's working, not because you're locked in.
Are there any hidden fees?+
None. You know exactly what you pay before you start. No surprise deductions, no fine print that shows up after your first week.
Can I switch plans after I start?+
Yes. If your lanes change or you start running cross-border after starting on Relay Core, we move you up. Just let your dispatcher know.
Do you offer dispatching for small fleets?+
Yes. Relay Partner is built for carriers who are scaling up or running multiple trucks. Contact us and we'll put together the right setup for your fleet size.
What happens after the free trial?+
If you want to keep going, you stay on your chosen plan. If it's not the right fit, you walk away. No invoices, no awkward calls. We'd rather earn your business than hold you to a contract.
Do I need to sign anything upfront?+
Just a standard service agreement before we start dispatching. No long-term commitments, no minimums. One page, no surprises.
Running Under Our Authority
I don't have my own authority yet. Can I still haul?+
Yes. You can run under our authority while you get your own set up, or for as long as it makes sense for you. You keep your earnings as an owner-operator and we handle the authority side so you can start earning now instead of waiting months on paperwork.
Why would I run under your authority instead of getting my own?+
Getting your own authority takes time and there is a lot of paperwork standing between you and your first load. Running under ours lets you skip the wait and start earning right away. When you are ready to get your own, we can help you with that too.
Free Services and Offers
Is the free website actually free or is there a catch?+
It is free as long as you are on Relay Pro or Relay Partner. No trial period, no hidden billing, no renewal that catches you off guard. You get a clean one page website, a free domain, free hosting and a free business email. We manage the site and hosting on our end. The business email is yours to use.
You help me find factoring for free. What is the catch?+
There is no catch. We have relationships with factoring companies that work with Canadian carriers at every stage, including brand new authorities with one truck. We match you with the right one and walk you through the terms. We do not charge you for it and we do not take a cut of your deal. This is available on every plan.
Do you really help me find insurance too?+
Yes. Finding the right insurance company in Canada is a pain and a lot of carriers overpay or end up with the wrong coverage. We do the search and the legwork for you at no charge as part of Relay Partner.
What is the residential hauler marketing offer?+
If you haul household goods, we build your online presence, set up your social media and run your ad campaigns to bring you moving jobs. Everything is free except what you choose to spend on ads. We only take a small percentage between 5 and 10 percent when you actually get booked for a move. You do not need to be a dispatch carrier to use this.
New Carriers
I'm just starting out and have no idea where to begin. Can you help?+
That is exactly who our Carrier Setup consultation is for. We walk you through everything you need to start a trucking company in Canada. Authority, permits, insurance, IRP, IFTA, ELD and cross-border paperwork if you plan to run into the US. You do not need to know anything going in. We build the full picture with you.
How much does the setup consultation cost?+
It is free if you sign up to dispatch with us. If you just want the consultation on its own it is $200 CAD. And if you book the paid consultation and then decide to dispatch with us within 30 days, we credit the $200 toward your first month.
Do I need to have my truck already to book a consultation?+
No. Some carriers book before they even buy their truck. The earlier you talk to us the better the setup decisions you make.
Support and Availability
Is support actually 24/7 or is that just marketing?+
It's real. Your dispatcher picks up. No voicemail, no call centre, no after-hours inbox. If your truck has a problem at 2am, we're picking up.
What if my dispatcher is unavailable?+
Your dispatcher is your primary contact and they're built around your schedule. If there's ever a gap, we have backup coverage that already knows your file. You're not starting from scratch with someone new.
How do I reach my dispatcher?+
Phone and text. Whatever works for you. Most carriers prefer text for quick updates and phone for anything that needs sorting fast.
Why Choose Truck Relay
What makes Truck Relay different from other dispatch services?+
We turn down loads that don't make sense for your truck. Most dispatch services book whatever's available so they get paid. We don't. If a load isn't right for your week, your lane or your rate target, we pass on it even when it costs us. Your truck making money is the only way we make money long term.
Do you work with new carriers or only experienced ones?+
Both. We've built onboarding that works for carriers who've never used a dispatcher and ones who've been running for years. What matters is that you want to make more with your truck.
How do I know I can trust the rates you're negotiating?+
You see the rate confirmation before the load is booked. Nothing moves without your sign-off. We negotiate hard and then we show you the number. You decide.
What if I've had a bad experience with a dispatcher in the past?+
That's exactly why we built the service the way we did. One dispatcher who knows your operation. No handoffs. No booking junk loads to hit a quota. No fine print. If you want to talk through what went wrong before, we're happy to do that too.
Still Have Questions?
We'll help you find the right fit for your truck and your lanes. No pressure, no scripts, just a real person who can actually answer what you're asking.
No contracts. No setup fees. Just better weeks, starting now.
